The Chemistry of the Blood: An Overview

The Chemistry of the Blood: An OverviewThis week, we're going to be talking about the chemistry of the blood. When it comes to the human body, the chemistry of the blood is a very important thing to know and understand.Let's take a look at how the blood works, shall we? The blood carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Oxygen helps the cells to work and get repaired. Without oxygen, all your cells would stop working and you'd begin to die. But where does the oxygen come from?Blood carries some substances with it - glucose (sugar) and red blood cells. These substances are broken down by the liver into glucose, which the body uses as energy. Red blood cells carry hemoglobin, which is another substance that carries oxygen. There are two kinds of hemoglobin - the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin and carbon dioxide-carrying hemoglobin. The oxygen-carrying hemoglobin is responsible for providing the oxygen needed by the body.Blood vessels also carry substances to and from the brain. The brain, in turn, uses these substances as chemicals to help with processing information. A piece of brain tissue called an axon receives chemical signals from other neurons to transmit messages to other parts of the brain. When a blood vessel is injured, the blood vessel's oxygen and nutrients may not get to the brain as quickly as they should. This is one reason why stroke is a serious medical condition.Once the brain receives the chemical signal, it communicates it to the spinal cord, which then sends messages to the muscles. Those messages are carried through the blood to the muscles. The message is 'move' - but how do you move? You use muscles to move your body. So how do muscles move?In order to move, the heart muscle contracts. If the blood isn't flowing to the heart, it won't contract, and you'll have a heart attack. Also, your lungs, diaphragm, stomach, intestines, and skin must receive oxygen and nutrients. These can't move without the blood coming from the heart. So the blood must flow to these parts of the body. The chemistry of the blood is essential for your life. You cannot live without the blood flowing in your body. But if your blood is not healthy, it will stop functioning properly. This can lead to disease, decreased production of vital chemicals, and may even cause death. By learning about the chemistry of the blood, you can protect yourself from such threats. Make sure you learn everything you can about the chemistry of the blood.
